Every year the Super Bowl sets the bar for massive swarm behavior. As Brian Stelter of NYT pointed out after last year, there is simply, no bigger annual water cooler event in the digital sphere. This year will likely be no different.
At Trendrr, we view the Super Bowl as an opportunity to look at historical social growth, overall for a single event. As you can see from the chart below – social engagement surrounding the Super Bowl has continued along a path of growth on orders of magnitude. Now – in fairness, these numbers also reflect growth in our ability to parse real-time conversations from the market place. The first year, 2009, was extremely topline and not as granular as subsequent years. In the last few years we have also added new data sources that have added to the growth (social check-in applications), but those are still a small percentage of the conversation. So—apples to oranges acknowledged on the edges—this is still a fascinating data set to behold.
